A recent study found that although drug recalls happen quite frequently, The Food and Drug Administration does not alert doctors and patients as well as they probably should.

According to researchers in the case, the FDA failed to send warning notifications to doctors in five of the most serious drug recalls in the past eight years. These recalls are called Class 1 recalls and are known to cause “serious adverse health consequences or death.”

Between 2004 and 2011, researchers counted more than 1,700 drug recalls, 91 which were considered Class 1 recalls. During this time period, the FDA issued nearly 2,900 announcements through their recall systems.

The system is set up to notify all subscribers about the recalled products so that they will know the risks associated with the drugs. Researchers found that only 55 out of the 91 Class 1 recalls had notifications sent out.
